The HESUS Fund Inc. was established in 1997 as a direct outgrowth of longstanding and continuing concerns of several African-American attorneys, businessmen and community leaders. Each of these individuals, despite their diverse backgrounds, recognized the educational opportunities available to them as youngsters as indispensable components of the foundation of their professional success.
Over time, it has become increasingly apparent that the climate surrounding opportunities for minority students is vastly different from that of the 1970’s when government and academic institutions took a far more aggressive role in attracting and assisting qualified minority candidates. In an effort to address those concerns, the HESUS Fund has established as its primary purpose the awarding of academic scholarships for undergraduate students.
- Eligibility Requirements: High School seniors who have been accepted into a
college or university or students who are currently enrolled as freshmen or
sophomores at a college or university.
- The Criteria for Awarding Scholarships: Scholarships will be awarded to
students who have demonstrated leadership potential through their classroom and/or community activities and who are active in their communities. Factors considered include student’s participation in or leadership role in school-sponsored activities, community-based projects, volunteer organizations or religious activities.
- Students must be able to demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
Applications consist of a minimum 250 word essay, maximum 500 word written by the scholarship candidate detailing his/her goals at college, their community activity, how they see themselves and others as leaders, and how the scholarship award will assist them in achieving their goals. The essay, double spaced should be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from an adult who has worked with the student in their school-sponsored activities, community-based projects, volunteer organizations and/or religious activities. All applicants will be evaluated by the Scholarship Committee. Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis. No applicant will be considered if there is any blood relationship or employment affiliation with any member of the Executive Committee or the Scholarship Committee. |
